Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota died at the age of 28 following a road accident in Spain in July 2025. His younger brother, André Silva, also died in the incident. Liverpool confirmed Jota’s death on July 3, 2025.Born in Porto on December 4, 1996, Jota began his professional career with Paços de Ferreira, where he progressed through the club’s youth system before making his senior debut during the 2014–15 season. He quickly established himself as an attacking player and became one of the club’s notable young prospects.In 2016, Jota moved to Atlético Madrid. Although he did not make a competitive first-team appearance for the Spanish club, he spent the following season on loan at FC Porto, where he gained experience playing in domestic and European competitions.His career took another significant step when he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. Jota played an important role in Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League during the 2017–18 season, scoring 17 goals in the Championship campaign. His performances led to the move becoming permanent.During his three seasons at Wolves, Jota made 131 appearances and scored 44 goals. He also helped the club establish itself in the Premier League and was involved in Wolves’ run to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League during the 2019–20 season, scoring nine goals in the competition.In September 2020, Jota joined Liverpool on a long-term contract. At the time of the transfer, he had already scored nine goals in 14 Europa League appearances for Wolves during the 2019–20 campaign.Jota made an immediate impact at Liverpool, scoring on his Premier League debut against Arsenal. During his first season, he also scored a hat-trick against Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League. His ability to play in several attacking positions made him an option across Liverpool’s forward line.Across five seasons at Liverpool, Jota made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals. During that period, he won the FA Cup in 2021–22, the League Cup in 2021–22 and 2023–24, and the Premier League in 2024–25.Jota also represented Portugal at international level. He progressed through the country’s youth teams before making his senior debut in 2019. He went on to earn almost 50 senior international caps and was involved in Portugal’s campaigns in major international competitions.His final season with Liverpool ended with another Premier League title. Jota’s death came shortly afterwards, at a point when he had established himself as a regular member of both Liverpool’s squad and the Portugal national team.Following his death, Liverpool, the Portuguese Football Federation, former clubs, teammates and supporters paid tribute to him. Liverpool later announced that the club’s No. 20 shirt would be retired across all levels of the club, following consultation with Jota’s family. The club described the decision as a first in its history.Jota’s professional career lasted just over a decade, taking him from Portuguese football to Spain, England and the international stage. He finished his career with major domestic honours at Liverpool and a record of more than 300 senior club appearances across the teams he represented.
